Communication Studies Department
Advising Policy
1. All majors on probation must see an advisor before they will be allowed to register for the next semester.
2. All students who are new to Communication Studies must see an advisor during their first semester in the program. (This includes first-time freshmen, students who transfer from other CSUS departments or students who transfer from another college or university.) To ensure students meet with an advisor, an advising hold will be placed under the student's name during the first semester in the department. This hold must be cleared before the student can register for a second semester in the program.
3. First-time freshmen must meet with an advisor again during their second semester as a sophomore. To ensure students meet with an advisor, an advising hold will be placed under the student's name during the first semester as a sophomore. This hold must be cleared before the student can register as a second semester sophomore.
Note: Advising holds are based on your class level, academic standing, and by the date a Change of Major Form is effective. It is possible that a student will be placed under an advising hold even though the student has already taken several ComS classes.
To clear a hold: The student must meet with an advisor to discuss a plan of study. The advisor will work with the student to list appropriate courses/alternates to be taken. Recommended courses should be listed on a Hold Removal Form. The student must return the completed/signed form to the front desk (MND-5014) to have the hold cleared. Hold are cleared the same day they re received.
