OPPORTUNITIES
The department has a list of agencies that have agreed to make internship opportunities available; the exact number and variety of openings changes each semester. Generally, opportunities are provided by local, state, and federal government offices, social service organizations, media production and distribution firms, broadcast stations, the marketing, personnel, and corporate communication departments of large firms, and public relations and advertising agencies. Activities include data collection and evaluation, identification and analysis of communication program design, media production, electronic journalism, public relations and publicity, sales training, and more.
Most internships are advanced openings for which special skills and/or preparation in specific academic courses are expected. Opportunities for students who are just beginning communication courses are usually not available.
Descriptions of available opportunities for Communication Studies and Journalism majors are available for viewing online by clicking the navigation bar labeled "Internship Opportunities" to the left above.
You may set up your own internship with an agency not currently listed by the Department. Obtain the separate guideline sheet titled: "Creating Your Own Internship" from the "Application and Evaluation Forms" link above, review carefully the criteria established for these opportunities, and, if you feel your opening will qualify, attach that form to your application.
You cannot use your job to earn academic credit for an internship. It may be possible to obtain credit for your job through ComS 194 - "Communication Studies--Related Work Experience." Such credit may not be used to fulfill the requirements of the major. See the Internship Coordinator or the Coms 194 link above for more information regarding this opportunity.
